The 13 year cycle Cicadas are starting to come up out of the ground by the corner of our house. The whole area looks like it's moving, which is quite interesting to see. Cicadas are relatively harmless but when they land on you it can feel somewhat creepy seeing two red eyes staring at you.
Our large tree is slowly getting covered with Cicadas nymphs getting ready to molt. There's a goodly amount of their cast-offs at the bottom of our tree.
These ones have molted and are drying out.
While I don't mind the Cicadas too much I think I will be happy to leave them behind for a wee while when I leave for Scotland next week.

And just to end on a pretty note. The weather has gotten hot all of a sudden and this morning my lilies bloomed.
Searched and found this: "While some simply find the noise a nuisance, gardeners have more cause to worry. The "harmless" cicadas aren't so harmless to young and ornamental trees. The females slit any branches thinner than a pencil down the middle and lay their eggs in the crevices. This can cause flagging in smaller, younger trees, so gardeners usually cover them with protective netting before the first cicadas begin to emerge." So, beware of tree damage.

I don't know it I could cope with your cicadas. Hope you enjoy your holiday back in Scotland and that the weather won't be too unkind to you.
ReplyDeletePretty lily. Lovely bugs too. I never had a problem with the Cicadas, but my ex was so afraid of them. So one day, I get a frantic call from down the street that I need to come down to his friends house. I go down thinking he's fallen down the stairs or something only to find there's a Cicada on his back and they're all afraid of it, lol. I picked it off and took it outside. Big babies, lol.
